Local product Max Scherzer is making history. On Wednesday, Scherzer was announced as the 2017 National League Cy Young Award winner. This is his second straight Cy Young and his third overall. Scherzer won his first Cy Young while pitching for Detroit, his recent two pitching in Washington. On the year, Scherzer went 16-6 with a 2.51 ERA across 200.2 innings. He did this was a cartoonish 12.0 strikeouts per nine. In short, Scherzer dominated the NL this year. You know that. What you may not know:
Max Scherzer is from the St. Louis area and went to high school at Parkway Central.
Most people will tell you that when you meet someone from the St. Louis area they will say “oop” when squeezing past you in public and they will ask you which high school you went to. If you were to ask Max, he would tell you Parkway Central. It’s always great to see a local athlete, like David Freese or Ryan Howard, make a name for themselves. Scherzer is doing much more than that: there is talk that he may be punching his ticket to the Hall of Fame with his dominance.
St. Louis has produced plenty of stars, and we’re not done yet!
One of the cool parts about providing custom sports uniforms to the St. Louis area is we never know which kid that puts on a jersey from Winning Streak will be the next Max Scherzer. We don’t even know what sport the stars may come from. St. Louis has a strong soccer tradition, and recently handed six first round draft picks to the NHL.
Max Scherzer isn’t the only baseball legend from St. Louis.
