How to Pull Off a Fundraiser BBQ

Winning Streak is home for your BBQ t-shirts.

If you’re looking for a fundraiser idea that sums up the joy of summer perfectly, it would be a BBQ. Two kinds of heat, all kinds of fun. No matter if you’re a non-profit or a community organization looking to raise funds or a business looking to get your name out there, BBQ is the way to go. Here are some things you must consider while planning your event.

Location, Location, Location

Just like in business and real estate, location is everything. When planning an event for summer, you at least don’t have to limit yourself to indoor locations. On the contrary, outside is the place to be. That being said, with the notoriously fickle weather in the St. Louis area, you can’t depend on mother nature to play along. Between rain and excessive heat, you should try to pick a location that includes space for “plan B,” or at least have a backup plan in case of inclement weather.

Make sure you have the permits.

Wherever you hold your event, you have to make sure you are in compliance with local ordinances. If you’re selling booze, you’ll need a liquor license. Many places require special permits for live music, or late-night events. If you’re cooking food on-site, you may have to pass a health inspection.

Invite other BBQ groups to compete.

Variety never hurt anyone, and a great way to have variety and keep from shouldering the entire burden is to invite other BBQ groups to set up shop and have a BBQ competition. That will attract far more visitors than one BBQ stand. You can have local businesses pay to enter teams or sponsor teams.

This one may seem like a no-brainer, but you skimp on bathroom facilities be prepared for problems. Angry visitors, long lines, even public urination…just spring for some port-o-potties.

Staff your event.

You’re going to need workers. There are typical workers to plan for like booth workers and cashiers, but you also have to plan for things like cleanup. Also, depending on where you have your event and how big it will be, you may be required to hire security.
