We are overjoyed to announce that we had a special visitor today at your facility in Dupo, Illinois. Olympic gold medalist, philanthropist, and Metro East native Jackie Joyner-Kersee visited us today. Jackie Joyner-Kersee is not just an American icon, but the most decorated female track and field star in Olympic history, with three golds, two silvers, and a bronze. She set four heptathlon records, and still holds the world record with a score of 7,291 points. Sports Illustrated named Jackie the greatest female athlete of the 20th century.
Arguably the greatest female athlete of all time, Jackie’s record on the field is only rivaled by her unparalleled track record in the community. In 2000, her charitable Jackie Joyner-Kersey Foundation opened the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Center in Jackie’s hometown of East St. Louis. The foundation and the center are aimed at providing high-quality after school programs for children.
Some of the sports programs offered by the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation include basketball, football, cheerleading, soccer, wrestling, and dance. Additionally, the foundation also provides after school programs like Eat-Live-Dream-Grow, aimed at healthy nutrition and smart food choices, as well as academic programs aimed at helping children with reading and communication, as well as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) skills. The foundation also provides a Healthy Steppers program for seniors as well as several camps.
Jackie stopped by our facility to discuss t-shirts we are screen printing for the JJK Summer Camp, an 8-week camp for youth ages 6-13. From the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation website:
“The JJK Summer Camp is an 8-week program for youth ages 6 – 13 that includes academic support, Urban Scouting, substance abuse prevention education, recreation, fine arts, and cooking.”
We are thrilled and honored to partner with Jackie for these t-shirts. The work done by the Jackie Joyner-Kersee foundation makes all the difference in the lives of the children who participate. We encourage all of you to visit the JJK Foundation website and learn more about what the foundation does for kids. For registration information for the JJK Summer Camp, please call 618-274-5437.
