The popularity of swimming skyrocketed when Michael Phelps splashed onto the Olympic scene. At the age of 15, he became the youngest athlete to compete in the Olympic games in 68 years. While he didn’t win a medal in Sydney, he did get a taste for world competition. With a strict diet, an intense workout plan and long hours in the pool, Phelps body developed into the ultimate swimming machine. His long, lean physique and expansive arm span, made his stroke the most efficient, natural mechanism the world had seen.
In the spring of 2001, Phelps set the world record in the 200-meter butterfly, becoming the youngest male swimmer in history to set a world swimming record. He then broke his own record at the 2001 World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, with a time of 1:54:58, earning his first international medal. Phelps continued to set new U.S. records in butterfly and the individual medley. Over the next four years, he set five world records, earned 8 gold medals in the Olympic games in Athens, Greece. His presence in the pool has forever changed the sport. Phelps claims that he doesn’t know what the future holds, but continues to promote the sport of swimming.
For the rest of the world, school is out, and swimming is in. The dynamics of the underwater world of swimming continues to elude most traditional athletes. Tank tops and t-shirts substitute for team jerseys for many crews of chlorine, blonde swimmers. In lieu of protective, athletic gear fromRawlings, swimmers don sleek suits and Speedos. They live by the mantra “All I need are goggles.”
So you may not think Winning Streak is the place for swimmers, but through the kickboards and swim caps, and you’ll find one thing all teams have in common – custom uniform design.
